Introduction:
Tomato Chutney is a simple and flavourful South Indian accompaniment made with fresh tomatoes, onions, chillies, and a light tempering. This chutney has a perfect balance of tanginess and spice and is an everyday favorite served with breakfast dishes like idli and dosa.
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
- 3 medium onions (sliced)
- 4 medium tomatoes (sliced)
- 5–6 garlic cloves
- Small piece of ginger
- 3 green chillies
- 3 Byadagi chillies
- 2 dried red chillies
- 4–5 tbsp roasted Bengal gram
- Small amount of coriander leaves
- Salt to taste
For Seasoning:
- 2 tbsp refined oil
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- ½ tsp urad dal
- ½ tsp Bengal gram (chana dal)
- 4–5 curry leaves
Method:
1. Heat oil in a kadai.
2. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, and Bengal gram dal and allow them to splutter.
3. Add sliced onions, curry leaves, green chillies, Byadagi chillies, dried red chillies, ginger, and garlic.
4. Sauté for a few minutes until the onions turn soft and translucent.
5. Add sliced tomatoes and salt. Sauté until tomatoes become soft and well blended.
6. Add roasted Bengal gram, mix well, and switch off the flame.
7. Allow the mixture to cool completely.
8. Grind into a smooth paste using little water if required.
Serving Suggestion:
Serve fresh with hot idlis and crispy dosas.
