Introduction:
Simple Thick Poha is a light and comforting South Indian breakfast made using thick flattened rice. Prepared without spices, this recipe highlights natural flavours with gentle tempering, making it easy to digest and perfect for everyday meals.
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 12–15 minutes
Ingredients:
- ½ kg thick poha (thick flattened rice)
- 7 tbsp refined oil
- 4 medium onions (sliced)
- 3 medium tomatoes (sliced)
- 4–5 green chillies (slit)
- 8–9 curry leaves
- 100 grams roasted peanuts
- Small amount of grated coconut
- Juice of ½ lemon
- Coriander leaves for garnish
- Salt to taste
For Seasoning:
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 1 tsp Bengal gram dal
Method:
1. Wash and soak the thick poha in water for 5-6 minutes until soft but not mushy. Drain well and keep aside.
2. Heat oil in a kadai or pan.
3. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, and Bengal gram dal. Let them splutter.
4. Add sliced onions, slit green chillies, curry leaves, and a pinch of turmeric powder. Sauté until onions turn soft and translucent.
5. Add sliced tomatoes and sauté until they become soft.
6. Add the drained thick poha and salt. Mix gently and cook for 2 minutes.
7. Reduce the flame to low and allow the poha to heat and soften for 5 minutes.
8. Add roasted peanuts, grated coconut, lemon juice, and coriander leaves. Mix gently and switch off the flame.
Serving Suggestion:
Serve hot as a breakfast or light meal.
